TSMC sells one thing: the ability to turn another company's chip design into finished silicon at a yield and volume no rival can match. It does not sell phones, graphics cards, or branded processors of its own. When it pioneered the pure-play foundry model in 1987, founder Morris Chang made a promise that still anchors the business: TSMC would manufacture its customers' products and never compete with them. That single constraint is the source of almost everything that follows.

The promise matters because chip designers hand TSMC their most valuable secrets. A fabless company like Nvidia or Apple sends over the blueprint for a processor it has spent more than a billion dollars developing, then trusts TSMC to build it without launching a rival product using what it learns. That trust has concentrated market power. TSMC served 522 customers, but its top ten customers were 76% of revenue and its single largest customer 22%, with Nvidia displacing Apple at the top of the list in 2025 as AI accelerators eclipsed smartphones.
